Regular but flexible volunteer positions open:
How does Lakewood contain costs while aiming to provide a well-maintained facility?
The answer is through the skills and willing hearts of volunteers. In fact, almost everything built at Lakewood came by the dedication of Mennonite volunteers who had a vision and passion to provide a camp facility for the enrichment of Christians across the state of Florida and beyond. Lakewood appreciates each volunteer who gives of their time and talent to serve God in this way. We believe that volunteer work at Lakewood should be, and is, a win-win proposition. How could volunteering be a win-win for both Lakewood and you?
Well, it is clearly a win for Lakewood because your time and skills help us provide the best facility at the lowest cost; a savings we pass along to our guests. We get to enjoy your friendship and learn from your life experience and expertise. And our guests benefit from the fruit of your efforts.
But we believe that you will benefit too. Volunteers receive a contagious sense of satisfaction and accomplishment found only through selfless sacrifice. They enjoy fellowship with one another and with our staff while working. Many times our volunteers also learn new skills. Youth who have not worked outside the home gain a perspective on workplace ethics. Students may earn community service hours, gain work experience for a job resume and may receive a reference letter for a future employer. Church groups and families have fun while strengthening relationships together. Lasting memories are made. And along with the work, volunteers get to enjoy time at Lakewood’s activities for no charge. Some projects even provide for free or reduced pricing on overnight accommodations and meals. All our volunteers earn a special place in our hearts and are recognized for their work. Some volunteers have even become Lakewood staff members.
Lakewood has volunteer projects and programs to fit every age, skill level, and group size. We maintain a constant list of volunteer opportunities so that we are always prepared for an individual or a group at a moment’s notice. The list below is a sampling of typical tasks we have available.
There are many levels of commitment and involvement available. We work with individuals of almost any age, families, youth groups, men’s or ladies groups, college students, and whole church groups. Sometimes the task takes an hour or two; others may be for a weekend or a week, such as over spring break. We also enjoy the work of resident volunteers who stay a couple of weeks and often months, usually with snowbirds from northern climates through the winter months. There is a special area set aside for RV’ing volunteers who plan an extended stay. Lakewood welcomes the involvement of professional volunteer organizations like SOOP, SOWERS, and other Christian service ministries.
Finally, for those who wish to maintain a long term volunteer commitment, we offer our Adopt-A-Building program. Details of this program can be found under the tab by that name or click on the link.
Perhaps you or your group will enjoy a winning experience volunteering at Lakewood. Please contact us by phone or e-mail to discuss your interest. We believe you will be blessed and enjoy the experience as much as we will enjoy your willing service.
